Preparing for Worship, 2/17/2013

On Sunday at Evanston Bible Fellowship, we will hear Part 2 of our sermon on “Lust” from the “Seven Deadly Sins” mini-series (you can listen to Part 1 here). Pastor Jason will be encouraging us from the book of Proverbs to pursue God’s plan for intimacy and passion, and to embrace the forgiveness and grace available to us when we fall short. The music team on Sunday will include two male vocalists leading from the acoustic guitar, a third male vocalist leading from the MIDI Keyboard, a Pianist, an Electric Guitarist, a Drummer (who will double on female vocals), and – a new one for us at EBF – a Viola! The setlist seeks to celebrate the character of God, who[…]

Preparing for Worship, 2/10/2013

On Sunday at Evanston Bible Fellowship, we will continue our mini-series of “The 7 Deadly Sins” from the book of Proverbs. So far, we have covered Pride, Envy, Wrath, and Sloth. This Sunday we will look at “Lust,” which I am sure will be one of the most intense and hard-hitting sermons thus far. We will anchor ourselves in Proverbs chapter 5, and Pastor Jason will help us explore what Proverbs has to say about lust, passion, sexuality, identity, and purity. Songs we will sing together will focus first on who God is and His passionate love for us (Furious, Great I Am, Before the Throne of God Above), and then will allow us to respond by recommitting ourselves to[…]

Sunday Service Recap 2/3/2013

We continued our journey through the “7 Deadly Sins” with a sermon on “Sloth.” This week, our executive pastor Jon Bechtle brought a powerful word against sloth by calling us to fully embrace Ephesians 2:10, that we are “God’s workmanship, created in Him for good works.” Our worship this week also included sharing the Lord’s Supper together as a church. This week the worship team welcomed a new vocalist who doubled on tenor saxophone. I led from the guitar and vocals, and was joined by another female vocalist who also played acoustic guitar. Yet another leader joined us with her voice from the keyboard. Rounding out the team this week was bass guitar, drum set doubling glockenspiel, electric guitar, and trombone[…]

Wrath (1 of 1)

Sunday Service Recap 1/27/2013

Once a year, Evanston Bible Fellowship meets at the beautiful Hotel Orrington in downtown Evanston. This past week was that service! We utilize a fantastic ballroom upstairs, complete with winding staircase and dangling chandeliers. Needless to say, this is always a blessing and a huge adventure! Pastor Jason continued our mini-series on the “7 Deadly Sins” with a powerful message on Wrath. Our worship was stripped way back, consisting of myself on vocals and acoustic guitar, another guy on guitar and vocals, and a female vocalist who also led some of the music. We had extra time in the service this week, so we expanded our setlist a bit. Sunday Setlist 1/27/2013 O Worship the King – Traditional, arr. Chris Tomlin Beautiful,[…]

Envy (1 of 1)

Sunday Service Recap 1/20/13

This past Sunday, we continued in our mini-series on the “7 Deadly Sins” within the book of Proverbs, with Pastor Jason preaching to us on Envy. This weekend, as I was leading the retreat, another of our gifted leaders, Matt, ran the rehearsal and led the service on Sunday. He led from the guitar, and was joined by his wife on vocals. There was one other female vocal who joined them in leading from the piano. Added to that was electric guitar, drumset, and fretless bass. The setlist this week emphasized God’s provision, and carried themes throughout of God’s glory and holiness. The Sufjan Stevens arrangement of “Holy, Holy, Holy” has been a hit at EBF, and we love singing[…]

Pride (1 of 1)

Sunday Service Recap 1/13/13

Over the next seven weeks, Pastor Jason will be preaching a mini-series within Proverbs on “The Seven Deadly Sins” addressing those sins commonly referred to as “deadly” – Pride, Envy, Anger, Lust, Sloth, Greed, and Gluttony. Of course all sins are deadly, but we as a church will be interacting with these 7 ideas over the next 7 weeks. At the end of this mini-series, we will begin an intense week of prayer, preaching, worship, and community entitled “Prelude to Revival.” This winter and spring are shaping up to be an intense and powerful season in the life of our church. With Pastor Jason preaching on “Pride” this week, we chose to do a set that focused on God as[…]
