“Comfort & Joy” EP available now!

After months of hard work, hours of rehearsing and recording, marathon sessions of engineering and fine-tuning, and countless tweaks, our Christmas EP, “Comfort & Joy,” is finally available! It took 26 people (just over half of our worship team!) and many hours work, but we are so excited to share this new project with you at long last. We are making this EP available for free, but know that any donations above the cost of “free” will directly support future recording projects at EBF. Merry Christmas, and happy listening! Funeral for a Friend

On Sunday morning, October 6, my friend Sue died of cancer. I heard the news a little after 6:00 AM as I was getting ready to head to the church to begin my weekly routine of set-up, rehearsal, two services, and tear down. Sue was first diagnosed with her cancer a year ago. I remember that I found out on a Tuesday – I always get bad news on Tuesdays. I remember that I sat at my dining room table and cried into my cheerios when I first heard she was sick. It seemed unfair, like Sue was the last person in the world who deserved to get cancer. Sue was wonderful, like the embodiment of home. She always had[…]

“The Times, They Are A’ Changin”

It has been an exciting and busy season at Evanston Bible Fellowship. During the summer months, the city of Evanston quiets down a little bit. The Northwestern students take off to change the world, and many members of our church spend the summer months traveling and refueling for the upcoming academic year. For us as a creative team, it has been a productive season of growth, and more than a little change. Several exciting things have been happening at EBF. To accommodate newfound growth, our church has moved to having two worship services on Sunday mornings – one at 9:00 AM, and the second at 10:30. The services are the same. The only reason for splitting into two is that we[…]

Come And Be

We are so excited to introduce our next homegrown worship song, “Come And Be,” to the church this Sunday morning. This song is inspired by the book of Romans, chapter 8 (verses 12-17), where Paul talks about what it means to be adopted as sons of God. Here is the specific text: “So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of[…]

A Culture of Creativity

This week at EBF, we will be doing another new song that we wrote in-house, a song called “My Great Reward.” It is the result of a collaboration we did back in January on our worship retreat, and I am so excited to share it with the church. The words are a powerful reminder that the Lord Jesus Christ is our reward – not earthly riches or fame, not status or success. The song begs God to remove our idols and shape our hearts and lives into ceaseless worship. I can’t wait to sing it as a church on Sunday! The new emphasis on songwriting at EBF has been a wonderful time of creativity and serendipity, but we must do[…]

Like a Teaching Hospital

If you know anything about a “Teaching Hospital,” then you have a good idea of how Evanston Bible Fellowship is structured. At a teaching hospital, there are many doctors and practicing physicians, but there are also residents and interns who do a great deal of the medical process. When my wife delivered Eli, our son, much of her care was given by interns and residents. And they were terrific! At EBF, we have a robust internship and residency program. Interns and residents take real command of real ministries full of real people, and are entrusted with shepherding and administrating well. Further still, we give many gifted men who are not interns or residents the opportunity to serve and lead; you[…]

Father’s Day

(The featured image is my son and my grandfather – seems like a fitting photo for Father’s Day!) Father’s Day was a powerful Sunday for our church. Pastor Jason brought an anointed word from 1 Kings 11 about Solomon (the author of Proverbs) and how, late in his life, he fell away from the Lord. Our service was an impassioned plea for men to step up and follow God all the way to the end – to persevere in our faith. This was my first Father’s Day, and it was one to remember! Our worship set drew on these themes as well, and we had a special time of worship during the song “White As Snow,” where Brady (who was[…]

Preparing for Worship, 6/2/2013

We are finishing up our sermon series on the book of Proverbs this week and next. What a challenging and powerful thing it has been to study this text together at EBF! I am really looking forward to this summer as a chance for us to rest in God’s Word anew, and to experience a fresh pouring out of God’s Spirit. Our service this week will include testimonies from four people who will be baptized on Sunday! During the service, each person will have a chance to share their story in front of the church, and afterwards we will have our baptisms in Lake Michigan. Expect a powerful time of worship as we celebrate with these people what God has[…]
